My Story about One Man’s Hero. By: John A Ahlin DRFC UK |

Just after the UK fan club started. I took great interest in Daniela’s film One Man’s Hero.
In 1998 it was realised that OMH had been dumped by MGM after buying Orion films, and was considered to be “anti American” Much lobbying had been done by the Tom Berenger fan club, so I thought as we were in the UK next to Ireland I should get involved and this is the story. In late 1998 A documentary film producer (Mark Day) gave me many Irish contacts and from these it became clear that the film and what it stood for was not going to die without a fight, so with help from the Mexican Ambassador in Ireland who was keen to host a screening, I convinced Silver Lion films in LA that with so much interest in Ireland a copy of the film would help enormously, so a video was sent over to the Galway Film Centre who rejected it saying it was a documentary and they wanted a movie!
World Premier: 2nd August. Belfast Northern Ireland After contacting more people and organisations and passing on this information to Silver Lion Films, the Word Premier was arranged in Belfast on the 2nd of August 99 over 1100 people saw the film and I think most were very moved by it, many women were in tears when they left the theatre. One of the celebrity guests that evening was Gerry Adams he agreed with me that the film brought people from many countries together, Tom Berenger attended the Premier , but Daniela was too busy much to the disappointment of the guests and the Irish cast. European Premier: 4th August 1999 Dublin Eire I passed the film on to the Irish film Centre in Dublin who loved it and from that the European premier was born and a great evening was had by all and I interviewed the American Ambassador of Ireland who greatly enjoyed the film and said “in no way was it Anti American” 600 people saw the film and I think most were impressed.
US Premier 23rd September 1999 Beverly Hills OMH then moved on to the US Premier in LA on the 26th September unfortunately I could not attend.
Mexican Premier 5th October 1999 Mexico City. I was invited to this and I met Daniela and her Mother and Tina Galindo and many others. Definitely not the same response from the audience, one thing they expected was Daniela to sing! a serious emission in my opinion even if it was over the titles and credits.
One thing that these Premiers proved was that the OMH was not “Anti American” and was well liked and had it had the full backing of MGM I am sure it would have been a success. What would that have done to Daniela’s career? We will never know now.
A couple of years later I tried to buy the rights of OMH but then that’s another story.
